Board of Directors
Ben Ostapuk,
Chair (2006)
Ben is a patent litigation partner in the San Francisco
office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he is also pro bono
coordinator and a member of the firm's Diversity Committee. A
resident of San Francisco since coming to Stanford Law School in
1993, Ben's first contacts with Haight Ashbury Free Clinics was
through Rock Med and friends who received health care at the clinic.
Ben's mother, Virginia Yrun, was
Executive Director of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona
throughout his youth, and this ingrained in him the critical need
for universal access to health care. Ben's life experiences as a
Latino, with those battling mental health disease, and with those
caught in the wheels of the War on Drugs, have committed him to
advancing the programs and servicing the communities which Haight
Asbury Free Clinics champions.
Eric Flowers, Vice Chair
(2001)
As President and Chief Executive Officer of Public Health
Service Bureau, Flowers has accumulated the wisdom and capacity to
excel in volunteer activities. Since his appointment to the Board in
2001, he has used his extensive experience in public health
delivery, contracts, and business management to instill best
practices in the Clinics’ governance and operations. An East Bay
leader, University of California, Berkeley graduate and M.B.A.,
Flowers exemplifies the very best in volunteer leadership and
capacity.
Marguerite Meade, Board Secretary
(2008)
Marguerite is a
lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay Area. She graduated from
U.C. Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.
Currently, Marguerite is a senior attorney at The Davis Law Firm in
San Francisco where she specializes in employment law. Marguerite
has long been interested in health care issues, especially those
that affect the uninsured. Marguerite has long advocated Haight
Ashbury Free Clinics philosophy that "health care is a right, not a
privilege".
Albert Berger (2009)
Albert has over 15 years of
experience driving benchmark setting growth, EBITDA and expansion
for globally focused Fortune 500, Private Equity and Venture Capital
Backed organizations. Mr. Berger has a record of strong, decisive
executive leadership in organizations ranging from start-up to $150
million, global in reach and scale and with interdisciplinary teams
of 500+ employees.
For
the past 7 years, he has served as President and General Manager for
Redwood Toxicology Laboratory (RTL), Inc. in Santa Rosa, California
which has become the largest single-site drug testing laboratory in
the world. Albert is also a member of the Redwood Toxicology
Laboratory Board of Directors. Prior to RTL, Berger served in a
variety of senior leadership positions with Tyco Electronics and
United Parcel Service.
Albert
received his Bachelors of Science in Organizational Communication
from Arizona State University and his Masters of Business
Administration from Saint Mary’s College.
As a
Board Member, Albert is proud to dedicate his time and energy
towards HAFCI. He is passionate about ensuring that the people of
the San Francisco Bay Area have access to the medical, drug
treatment and psychiatric programs/services that HAFCI provides each
day. The incredible work that is being done by the Haight Ashbury
Free Clinics is truly an inspiration.
Yanie Chaumette (2009)
Yanie received her law degree from
U.C. Davis and her B.A., cum laude in French & Spanish literature
from U.C. Berkeley. She has extensive experience in municipal law,
claims and litigation administration. For over 15 years she has
advised city departments on daily workplace issues and most recently
was managing attorney at the City of Oakland.
She
believes that healthcare is a right and not a privilege. Joining the
HAFCI board offers her a unique opportunity to make a small but
meaningful contribution by giving back to the community.
Todd Choy (2007)
Todd
has over 20 years of experience in finance, accounting and
administration in both large corporations (Gap and Nestle) and
venture backed start-up companies in the consumer packaged goods and
healthcare space. He is currently the CFO of Medem, Inc. where he
oversees the accounting, finance, human resources, and
administrative operations. Todd also assumes a business development
role in securing value added resellers (VARS) and electronic medical
record vendors (EMR). He is the Company's Secretary and Treasurer
for the Board.
Todd
is a member of the Board of Advisors of Angry Coffee Inc., a digital
music firm, a member of the executive advisory roundtable for San
Francisco State University, and has been quoted in CFO magazine and
ABC news. Todd holds a MBA in Finance from San Francisco State and a
Bachelor of Science in Accounting/Finance/Real Estate from UC
Berkeley.
Todd
is a native San Franciscan and still resides in the City with his
wife Jackie and sons Justin and Brandon.
Tom Christian (2009)
Tom is a 4th generation San
Franciscan and works in commercial real estate. He has helped both
non-profit and for-profit developers and corporations purchase,
lease, and dispose of facilities and development sites primarily in
San Francisco for over 24 years. Tom and his wife and two sons live
in San Francisco.
Tom has
a keen interest in the cost structure of health care and is an avid
student of the national single payer/universal system proposals as
they compare to the current health care delivery model. Tom knows
our economy can't sustain the current rates of annual medical care
cost increases and enjoys being close to the topic by being a board
member of HAFCI.
James Smith (2009)
James is an
experienced trial attorney in San Francisco, who specializes in
representing clients in employment and commercial disputes, with an
emphasis on class and representative actions. Mr. Smith received
his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College
of the Law, where he continues to teach as an Adjunct Professor.
Prior to law school, Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree
from the University of Minnesota and spent two years working as a
legislative aide for U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, working on a
number of healthcare initiatives.
Peter Sullivan (2009)
Peter is President
of PSAI Reality Partners, a private equity real estate investment
firm in San Francisco. Peter has 30 years of experiences in leasing,
finance, syndication and investment in Bay Area commercial real
estate. A third generation Californian, Peter earned his B.A. Cum
Laude as an Independent Scholar from Amherst College in Amherst,
Massachusetts. A father of two, Peter resides in Oakland.
Peter
is honored to be a part of this historic organization, and believes
it is even more important today than ever before to support and
strengthen the health care safety net exemplified by Haight Ashbury
Free Clinics for Bay Area residents.
Paul Thorndal (2009)
Paul
has been a San Francisco resident since 1985, when he moved to the
Bay Area from Montana to attend college. After graduating with a BA
in History from the University of California Berkeley, he attended
Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, graduating in 1995.
He is a partner in The Wald Law Group, practicing family law and
civil litigation involving LGBT families. His firm is known for its
work in Assisted Reproductive Technology law and its family
formation work for many Bay Area couples conceiving children through
ART.
Paul’s
first exposure to Haight Ashbury Free Clinic was in the late 1980’s
as a patient of the clinic on Clayton Street, during a year in which
he found himself uninsured and needing medical care. From his first
visit, he thought, “That is how medical care should be provided to
everyone in this country.” Paul is excited to work with HAFCI
because he believes in the importance of health care for everyone.
