Dr. David Smith founded Haight Ashbury Free Clinics in 1967 to serve the thousands of people that flocked to San Francisco during the Summer of Love who needed health care that was free and nonjudgmental. He has served as the Medical Consultant for the Professional Recovery Program at the Betty Ford Center, medical director for the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, and is a Fellow and past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
